Recommended Training: Screen Acting Intensive (Intermediate Level) at ISSA

At the end of August 2013 I attended a one-week crash course in screen acting at the International School of Screen Acting (ISSA). The course was delivered by Mark Normandy and covered all the basics of screen acting as well as information about the industry itself. I found the course incredibly beneficial, with practical tips on how to place yourself in front of the camera, a useful glossery of terms relating to the different shots used and the opportunity to take part in practical exercises. This was where the course really stands out as you are given simple exercises to do and then get to film them and watch yourself back, alongside your fellow classmates. This is brilliant as it really helps you to become aware of what looks good on screen and what doesn't. It also helps you to become more objective about yourself. It's also brilliant value for money as, for just under £400, you get a reasonable monologue and duologue recorded for you in addition to the tips and guidence. Mark's methods may not suit everyon as he is very fixed in his views and ideas, and is also direct and to the point in his observations, but this approach really worked for me - perhaps because I have a similar ethos to him.
If you already have some screen experience, I'd still say this is a good course to do as it will refresh your skills and you'll gain a lot from working collaboratively with the other people on the course.
